questing for fitness
I’ve long had this idea of overlapping two of my primary interests: roleplaying games and fitness. This is a rough draft of how this idea would shape up.
This is all a work in progress, but the below should eventually have an in-world D&Dish flavor to it
Terms and Mechanics
- A round is one real-world day.
- A turn is seven rounds, or one week.
- A quest is completed during a single round.
Questing by Levels
The guild will only give so many quests out to low ranked characters…
- When just starting out, you can perform 2-4 quests per turn
- At low levels, you will need to perform 3-5 quests per turn to progress
- At higher levels, you’re looking at 4-5 quests per turn, with 1-2 side quests.
Primary Quests
There are two primary quest types:
- Delivery quests send you out to a remote location and back. This involves travel by walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing, or similar.
- Combat quests send you to exert yourself and defeat enemies. This means muscular exertion under load.
When just starting out, the guild will provide a balance between the two, but as you increase in level, you should consider where to put more of a focus
UNFILTERED BLATHER
Simple Delivery: 30min LSS - Begin with run/walk as needed - Use nasal breathing / talk test as guide - Add 1-5min each week until 60min - After 60min, increase speed slightly
Simple Combat: Squat / Bench / Row @ 5/5/5+ - Find a reasonable starting weight for each in the first session - 5/5/5+ each session, increase lower by 5, upper by 2.5 (double if last set is 10+ reps) - On failure, reduce load by 10-20% and continue
Novice: - Simple Delivery 1-2x/wk - Simple Combat 1-2x/wk
Low Levels, choose: - Simple Delivery 3x/wk | Simple Combat 2x/wk - Simple Combat 3x/wk | Simple Delivery 2x/wk
Higher Levels: - Delivery: - 60+min LSS only 1x/wk - Speed/Hills/Intervals other 1-2 sessions - Combat: - Use 70/80/90% of computed max over 3 week period, then increase max - Consider A/B alternating of lifts - back/front squat, bench/press, row/chin
Side Quests: - One offs for weekends - Can be sports (group quests!) - Include GPP, high rep work, fun stuff like hand stands or climbing
Specialist Training: - This is for sport focus and means reducing delivery/combat quests
